How Long Can Your House Appliances Last
We all know that household appliances are necessary, but how long do they last? Of course there are many factors that come into play for determining the life-span of an appliance like brand, style, use, etc. We’ve done the work for you - here’s the average life expectancy of common household appliances:
Refrigerators
Most brands suggest that your fridge can last about 13 years. It is important to note that refrigerators with a built in water and ice dispenser may need a little more maintenance to get it to last you that long as they are more likely to break down than regular ones.
Gas and Electric Ranges
Gas ranges have a little more of a life expectancy than an electric range. On average, gas ranges can live to about 15 years whereas the electric counterpart is expected to live to about 13 years. The main difference between these two is that gas ranges tend to have a more exact temperature compared to electric, however, most households today use electric to avoid the visible flames.
Dishwashers
The approximate life expectancy of your dishwasher is dependent on how much you use it. For instance, a family of five who uses their dishwasher once a day is going to need a new one sooner than a couple who uses it twice a week. On average, a dishwasher can last about 9 years when used correctly.
Microwaves
Your microwave can last around 9 years. An important factor that reduces its years is if it is a microwave that doubles as a stove fan or light, as this could potentially make it not last as long or need more regular maintenance. For the most part, microwaves are a simple appliance that are not very needy.
Washer and Dryer
We paired these together because oftentimes they are bought in pairs. The life expectancy of these are dependent on the amount of uses like the dishwasher, but is about 13 years. Important factors to its life span is how many uses per week it gets, if it is a top loader or if they are stacked. These three circumstances can cause your washer and dryer to not live as long and need more upkeep.
How Do I Know How Old My Appliances Are?
If you are not too sure how old your appliances are, check the tag or sticker that shows the serial number. For newer appliances, the date should be clearly written on it but for the older appliances you will need to type your serial number into the brand’s website and it will tell you all the necessary information!
To Note
Having regular maintenance done to your appliances can help extend its working age to the most it can be. Also, keep in mind that the frequency of use of each appliance has a toll on the life expectancy - a family of 5 will need new appliances sooner than a bachelor. The cleanliness will also factor into how long an appliance will last for you. For the most part, if you continue to do regular maintenance and cleaning while using the appliance properly, you should be able to get many years out of it!
